Primary Care Provider (PCP):
When your child is a patient at Southside Pediatrics your pediatrician is referred to as a Primary Care Provider (PCP).  Pediatricians are also specialists in their field of medicine.  Depending on your insurance and the way your policy is structured, it's important to have your pediatrician listed as your child's primary care doctor.  Not having your pediatrician listed correctly with your insurance company can result in higher copays, other out of pocket expenses or your insurance claims being rejected.

Coordination of Benefits (COB):

Sometimes two insurance plans work together to pay claims for the same person. That process is called coordination of benefits.

When you have more than one insurance you need to let each insurance company know about the other. If you don't update this information, insurance companies can refuse to pay claims. If you ever lose an insurance, you need to let the remaining insurance company know that you no longer have any other coverage.

If an insurance company pays a claim and then realizes at a later date that you had other insurance coverage, they can take back the payment regardless of how long ago the payment was made. This can even be after the time that insurance allows us to bill claims, which would then leave the balance as the insured's responsibility.

To determine what insurance is primary or secondary it would be best to check with your insurance companies, but typically they follow what's called the birthday rule. The birthday rule states that whichever policy holder's birthday comes first in the calendar year would be primary. There are exceptions to this rule, such as court orders.
